In September 2021, in-person coffee events were finally welcomed back into our calendars and with that came the joy of welcoming back to Belfast the NI AeroPress Championships hosted in Black Box.
Alice Parsons, Bailies Engineer won the NI AeroPress Championships 2021 and went on to compete via a surrogate brewer at the World Championships hosted in Melbourne Australia. Alice sat down with us, and brewed up some coffees whilst chatting through what it was like to go from first time competitor to finalist in a World competition.
After the excitement of World of Coffee in Dublin, there was little rest for our head barista trainer Julia as she lead Northern Ireland’s first ever SCAE Professional Barista Skills course. Taking place over 3 intensive days in our Training Academy, the attendees were put through their paces. Covering everything from the science of espresso extraction, water chemistry and tasting various organic acids to learning about what exactly is in our milk and how to calculate the number of coffees you need to sell in your café to break even. Hidenori Izaki from Japan has won the 2014 World Barista Championship (WBC). Hidenori won the final round of the WBC, which took place on 12 June in Rimini, Italy at World of Coffee (WOC) as part of the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe's annual coffee event. Kapo Chiu of Hong Kong won second place, Christos Loukakis of Greece won third place, Craig Simon of Australia won fourth place, Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood of the United Kingdom won fifth place, and William Hernandez of El Salvador won sixth place.
