Ethiopia Guji Gr1 250g Roast Date 23/04/18
This natural Ethiopian heirloom from the Guji region, renowned for its ability to produce some of the best naturals in Ethiopia, this is a selection of some the prime lots in the region. Sweet dried apricot aromas followed by flavour notes of Hops, Gooseberry & Creamy Toffee.
Guji region is located in southern part of Ethiopia, east of Gedeo. The red loamy soil is very rich in minerals and high yielding coffee trees. Due to this, most coffee farmers in the region are relatively wealthy compared to other parts of Ethiopia. This is also the reason why until recent times, most coffee in Guji was naturally processed and delivered to washing stations after it had been dried. Bringing ripe, fresh cherries for wet processing is perceived as an indication of financial trouble. However, thanks to this perception there is a strong tradition in natural coffees allowing Guji to provide some of the best naturals in Ethiopia.
Smallholder farmers grow coffee trees on their garden. When the cherries are ripe, they are picked and placed on raised drying beds to slowly sun dry. Once the beans reach the correct moisture level, farmers then sell them to the local washing station. Privately owned washing stations then collect beans from various farmers in the local area and separate them by quality. Once they have enough coffee, they deliver it to Awasa to be auctioned on Ethiopian Commodity Exchange. This is a selection of the top lots secured by our exporter Heleanna, transported to Addis and prepared for exportation.
