Brazil Beatriz Penha Natural
Brazil Beatriz Penha Natural
After tasting a variety of coffees entered into Coopfam’s microlot quality competition, this lot from Beatriz stood out to us—and now it’s here for you to try.
Pedra da Lua is a coffee farm owned by producer Beatriz Penha, a member of the Coopfam cooperative in Brazil. Her farm is located in the Poco Fundo region, in the state of Minas Gerais.
On her farm, Beatriz grows the variety Mundo Novo, a natural cross between the Bourbon and Typica varieties. Mundo Novo is one of the most traditional varietals grown in Brazil and is known for producing an excellent cup profile. However, like many varietals, it is susceptible to disease, which makes cultivation challenging.
Despite these difficulties, Beatriz has produced this standout lot with support from Coopfam. Through the cooperative, she has received training and technical assistance, and has taken part in socio-environmental initiatives such as the Specialty Coffee Processing program. Experts in coffee drying and processing share their knowledge to help Coopfam’s farmers maximise the results of their post-harvest coffee processing.
About Coopfam
Coopfam - full name - ‘Cooperativa dos Agricultores Familiares de Poço Fundo e Região’ is a cooperative made up of small-scale, local farmers based in the state of Minas Gerais in SE Brazil. By creating a Microlot program, Coopfam are able to highlight the work of their most dedicated farmers. By also paying a higher price for quality coffee it allows farmers to invest in new equipment, which is providing farmers with the tools to produce exceptional Microlots.
Process
After the cherries are hand-picked, they are spread out in a thin layer on drying patios. Once the cherries have been drying for two days, the thickness of the layer is doubled to slow down the drying process slightly. Overnight, the coffee is formed into "volcanoes" to protect it from moisture and temperature fluctuations. In total, the drying time for this coffee lot was 18 days.
