This Ethiopian coffee comes to us from Daye Bensa, the acclaimed producer and export company founded by brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo in the Bensa Woreda (district) of southern Ethiopia. Named after their hometown and region, Daye Bensa is rooted in generations of coffee tradition and a deep connection to the local landscape.
Coffee has always been part of the Dukamo family history. After seeing his father struggle to make sustainable income selling locally, Asefa began transporting coffee to neighbouring villages offering better prices, eventually building the foundations of what would become one of Ethiopia’s most respected coffee producers.
The brothers planted their first coffee trees in 2013 and established their drying station in 2017. Surrounded by forest and century-old shade trees, the station provides an ideal environment for slow, careful drying that helps preserve clarity and sweetness in the cup.
Today, Daye Bensa operates dozens of washing stations and dry mills across the region, with a strong focus on quality, traceability, and investment in the local communities where their coffees are produced. Under the guidance of the next generation, including Asefa’s son Kenean, Daye Bensa continues to showcase the vibrant and expressive character of Ethiopian coffee.
Processing
Led by Kenean Dukamo, Daye Bensa began experimenting with anaerobic fermentation using carefully selected cherries from their Gatta farm. The highest quality ripe red cherries were sealed in fermentation tanks for 144 hours before being transferred to raised beds, where they dried slowly over 18–22 days.
The result was Gatta Anaerobic, a vibrant and expressive coffee that quickly gained international recognition, earning 2nd place at the prestigious Cup of Excellence competition.
This controlled anaerobic process produces an intensely sweet and fruit-forward cup, layered with notes of cherry, passionfruit, mango, and strawberry. The profile is complex yet refined, finishing with a soft, lingering sweetness and exceptional clarity.
